GRG Research

In 2003 COTA (NSW) ran 7 workshops as part of a research project commissioned by the then Federal Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, the Hon Larry Anthony into Grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.

Throughout Australia researchers consulted with grandparents about:

  • - their existing support mechanisms
  • - what additional support they may require
  • - the financial and legal issues they may be facing
  • - any concerns they may have about the well being of their grandchildren

Australia-wide 499 grandparents raising 548 grandchildren took part in the project. Of the 308 grandparent-headed families represented, 63% were couples. While 68% of the grandparents were aged 55 years or over, the eldest was a sole grandparent of 82 years of age raising three teenagers. In over half the families there were two or more children with the youngest grandchild being 12 weeks old and 53% being below 10 years of age.

A report entitled 'Grandparents Raising Grandchildren' was tabled in Federal Parliament in November 2003.
