Indigenous Services

In the aboriginal community kinship care is a way of life. There is no real need to ‘formalise’ these family arrangements and therefore a large number of grandparent headed families/kinship carers go uncounted and are often unsupported.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2003:
Indigenous children are 6.5 times more likely to be in foster, kinship or residential out-of-home care than the children of the mainstream population.

Issues in the lives of aboriginal grandparents and other kinship carers are similar to those of the ‘mainstream’ population; however they are complicated by the history and legacy of child removal in Australia – the stolen generation. There is a general mistrust of child protection services and government departments which means families often don’t receive benefits and services they could well use. Grandparents say: “This is not about the money, it’s about the children – saving the children and giving them a life”.

Government departments and community organisations can, and do, provide ‘koori friendly’ services and assistance.

Where do you go for Help?
